Scary Movies

Joey took Layla to see The Lorax at the movie theater for the first time earlier this summer. Layla thought the surround sound was too much for her oh-so-sensitive ears. I think we are to blame for her reaction to noise or maybe my Dad is the culprit. When any kid whines, several parents (aka. Grammy and Pap-Pap) I know say, "oh, too loud for my ears".  Now, Layla says that when Faven cries.

They were the only people in the movie theater on a Monday afternoon so they asked the staff to turn down the volume. For those who are familiar with the book, the setting is dark and gloomy. Well, those clouds and scenes of the Onceler peaking through the window of an old building were much too scary for Layla. The Lorax is one of Layla's all time favorite books so this should not have taken her by much surprise. Needless to say, they left 15 minutes into the movie.

Layla scares easily. Faven, not so much. Here is another example.

Just the other day at the book store, Layla turned to the 20th page of the story book, Pinocchio. She glanced at a picture Monstro, a giant whale and threw the book on the ground in fear.  She was literally trembling.

There are only a few movies we can show her.  Faven is up for anything her sister is up for and more. Madagascar, Cars, Lion King and Cinderella are movies we can handle. We used to fast forward through more than half of The Lion King. Layla is now immune to hyenas, Uncle Scar and fire.

Here they are watching Madagascar on a 114 degree day when I ran out of activities for them to do. Joey was on a business trip for 6 days. Because of this movie, I made it through the day.

A treat before bed. Alex the lion!
